Metters and Wellby have recently secured planning approval for three new dwellings in the conservation area of Poughill, Cornwall. The design takes a contemporary approach to the traditional barn form, carefully responding to its setting while making full use of the sloping site.
Living spaces are arranged across two levels to maximise views over the surrounding woodland. At the entrance, a clear line of sight draws you through the home and out to the landscape beyond, while circulation spaces are kept open and light-filled to create a sense of calm.
The rear of each house opens to an expansive kitchen, dining, and living space, with large glazing and a balcony that extend out to landscaped gardens. On the lower ground floor, a snug connects directly to the outdoors, offering a more intimate space for family life and entertaining.
Three bedrooms are distributed across the two levels—one at entrance level and two below—with en-suites, a family bathroom, and a guest WC. Practical details such as a utility room within the garage link are seamlessly integrated without disrupting the flow of the main spaces.
Natural materials, including stone, timber cladding, and slate, give the buildings a timeless quality, while feature elements such as corten steel at the entrance provide a distinctive contemporary edge.
At Metters and Wellby, we guided this project through both the design and planning stages, creating homes that respect their setting while offering modern, elegant living for future residents.
