This project began with a simple ambition, to create a long-term family home in one of Cornwall’s iconic coastal settings. As a local family running a business in the area, the clients were drawn to Widemouth Bay not just for its views, but for the lifestyle and connection to the landscape it offers.
The proposal replaces two existing bungalows with a single new dwelling, allowing the site to be reimagined. The original buildings were no longer suited to modern standards, both in terms of layout and energy performance, so the decision was made to start again, creating a contemporary, efficient home designed for modern coastal living.
We led the project from the outset, developing the design and securing planning permission, and are continuing to guide it through delivery. Our role extends across the technical design, as well as the interior design and landscaping, ensuring a consistent and carefully considered approach throughout.
The design is shaped by both the site and the clients, with living spaces carefully positioned to take in the expansive sea views, while more private areas are set back toward the garden. The layout has been developed to feel natural and intuitive, supporting day-to-day family life as well as quieter moments connected to the surrounding landscape.
Architecturally, the house takes cues from its context while introducing a more contemporary language through simple forms, generous glazing and carefully chosen materials. Sustainability is also central to the approach, with the new home designed to significantly improve energy performance and provide a comfortable, future-ready environment.
At its heart, this is about creating a Cornish home that feels personal and lasting, rooted in its setting, and shaped around the lives of the people who will live there.
